Sports fans have already been debating the merits in the Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 18 since that time publisher Electronic Arts announced it earlier this holiday season. EA itself was cryptic about the nature of the game - whether it would be a quote-unquote proper FIFA concept, or some kind associated with lesser experience - until EA Play prior to E3 2017.
After playing through an agreeable game between Real Madrid and Chelsea after a recent meeting with Nintendo, we came away impressed with FIFA 18 in Switch. It’s definitely not a similar high-fidelity game that EA may release this September on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox live One. But it’s no slouch, either - especially considering it is possible to play it on the bathroom ..
EA has been marketing FIFA 18 to be “built from the ground up” with the Switch, and a representative for that company told Polygon the Switch version uses a new custom engine - not really EA Sports Ignite, the engine that your PS4 and Xbox One versions employed to run on. It doesn’t quite feel as current as FIFA 17, but the developers could include some of the latest game play features, like this year’s new crossing system.
Most importantly, the engine manages to offer action at 60 fps, with resolutions of 1080p in the event the Switch is docked along with 720p when undocked. We were also impressed through the visuals, whether playing on a TV or using the Switch in our fingers. The game certainly looks superior to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 system versions, with the players’ detailed uniforms being a particular highlight.
